The Mission
Englewood Works is dedicated to empowering low-income residents of the Englewood neighborhood on Chicago's South Side by providing comprehensive employability skills and training. We strive to create pathways to meaningful employment, fostering economic self-sufficiency and community resilience. Through education, mentorship, and hands-on experience, we equip individuals with the tools they need to succeed in today’s workforce and build a brighter future for themselves and their families.
The Plan
Program Overview: Our 8-week training program focuses on equipping participants with skills in freeze-drying, laser cutting, 3D printing, and woodworking. Students will gain hands-on experience and practical knowledge, enabling them to pursue income-generating opportunities in these fields.
Week 1-2: Introduction to Freeze-Drying
- Objective: Provide students with a basic understanding of freeze-drying technology and its applications.
- Content:
- Day 1: Overview of freeze-drying, safety protocols, and introduction to the HRC100 Freeze Dryer.
- Day 2-3: Hands-on training on operating the freeze dryer, including setting up, running, and maintaining the machine.
- Day 4-5: Practical sessions on processing different types of foods, understanding moisture content, and packaging techniques.
- Day 6: Introduction to potential markets and business opportunities in freeze-drying.
- Day 7-8: Project work – students freeze-dry a variety of products and present their results.
Week 3-4: Introduction to Laser Cutting with Glowforge
- Objective: Teach students the fundamentals of laser cutting and engraving using the Glowforge.
- Content:
- Day 1: Overview of laser cutting, safety procedures, and introduction to the Glowforge Pro HD.
- Day 2: Basics of design software used with the Glowforge (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape).
- Day 3-4: Hands-on training in creating simple designs and cutting/engraving on different materials.
- Day 5: Exploring advanced techniques, including 3D engraving and multi-layer cutting.
- Day 6: Project work – students design and create a personal project using the laser cutter.
- Day 7-8: Review of projects, troubleshooting common issues, and exploring business applications.
Week 5-6: Introduction to 3D Printing with Creality
- Objective: Provide a comprehensive understanding of 3D printing technology and its applications.
- Content:
- Day 1: Overview of 3D printing technology, safety guidelines, and introduction to the Creality 3D Printer.
- Day 2: Basics of 3D modeling software (e.g., Tinkercad, Fusion 360).
- Day 3-4: Hands-on training in creating and printing simple 3D models.
- Day 5: Troubleshooting common printing issues and maintaining the 3D printer.
- Day 6: Project work – students design and print a functional object.
- Day 7-8: Review of projects, discussion on future trends in 3D printing, and potential business opportunities.
Week 7-8: Introduction to Woodworking
- Objective: Equip students with fundamental woodworking skills and safety knowledge.
- Content:
- Day 1: Overview of woodworking, tools, and safety protocols.
- Day 2: Introduction to basic woodworking techniques – measuring, cutting, sanding, and finishing.
- Day 3-4: Hands-on training in constructing a simple project (e.g., a small shelf or box).
- Day 5: Advanced techniques, including joinery and finishing.
- Day 6: Project work – students design and build a more complex item using the skills learned.
- Day 7-8: Final project presentations, feedback, and discussion on how to turn woodworking skills into income-generating activities.
Final Day: Review and Certification
- Objective: Review all skills learned, assess students' progress, and provide a certificate of completion.
- Content:
- Review session for all four skills.
- Q&A and troubleshooting any final questions.
- Presentation of certificates and discussion of next steps for utilizing these skills professionally.
